On the Knowledge of Some People on the Blood Donation


Abstract
A study was carried out to find the knowledge of some people on the blood donation in Seoul area. During the period of March 12 to April 17, 1971, 487 men and 245 women interviewed to fill the form which had been previously prepared.
The results could be summarized as follows;
1. The mean values of age were 35:4 years of men and 28.5 of women with the range of 17 to 72 years.
2. Out of 732, 27.5% were born in Seoul, 13.8 in Kyunggi, 10.8 in Kyungbuk etc..
3. Students were 31.3% of all interviewed people, commercial-industrial people 14.6%, company clerks 8.7%, soldiers 8.1% etc..
4. College students were 31.2%, high school graduates 25.5%, college graduates 29.5% ect...
5. Atheists were 54.4%, protestants 19.5%, buddhists 14.3%, catholics 7.7% etc..
6. Monthly incomes were w 30, 000 of male and w 40, 000 of female with w 35, 000 of mean valve. 7. A Type of blood were 28.9%, B Type 23.6%, 0 Type 31.9%, and AB Type 9.9%.
8. On the effect of the blood donors, 45.8% of the interviewed people said "bad", 20.5% "no effect",
16.2% "good" and 17.5% "unknown".
9. On the blood formation after donating blood, 80.7% said the blood formation was "expected", 1. 8% "unexpected" and 17.5% "unknown".
10. When asked maximum permissible time of blood donation a year, 35.3% said "do not know", 23.5% "once", 24.4% "twice" etc..
11. The experienced rate of selling blood was only 6.3% while no experienced 93.7%.
12. Due to financial reason, 45.6% sold blood, while 32.6% thought they had too much blood. 13. Only 10. 0% had donated blood while 89.9% had not.
14. To help others, 79.7% of experienced people donated blood while 9.5% thought they had too much blood.
15. Only 14.4% had received blood while 85.6% had not.
16. With operation 42.9% received blood, 14.3% did as a tonic, etc..
17. When asked the blood system in Korea, 37.4% said "selling", 11.0% "donation", 9.4% "deposit", 37.8% "do not know".
18. When asked the ideal blood system in Korea, 40.9% said "deposit", 25.9% "donation" 27.6% "do not know".
19. Among experienced people of blood donation, 15.4% were protestants, 13.3% buddhists, 10.7% catholics and 8.0% atheists.
